Red and Andy both survive decades in the prison's bleak, gray environment, 'institutionalized' until they can't even remember what it's like to function on the outside. In prison, they're placed at the mercy of 'honest' wardens and guards who are totally corrupt and make money on scams that should put them inside the walls with the prisoners they exploit and brutalize. Andy, the hero, is thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit, while his buddy Red is the only person in prison truthful enough to admit that he dun it. The story's themes focus on issues of imprisonment and injustice. But the book's always been there, lending the movie its most powerful moments and asking for nothing in return. Seriously, this film has been aired on cable at least once every one or two months since 1997. Most people discovered this story via its 1994 movie adaptation, which bombed on its initial release, but found new life after being nominated for seven Academy Awards and endlessly rebroadcast on cable TV networks. We guess even the Master of Horror himself needs a break from the keep-the-light-on-at-night stories he is so well known for. The novella-a fancy word for a short novel-is a far cry from the shrieks and scares we often associate with King, which might explain why it was included as part of King's Different Seasons collection. Stephen King, known by many as the Master of Horror, threw audiences for a loop when he wrote Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, a story that details a one-of-a-kind friendship between two convicted inmates and how one of the inmates pulls off a gutsy (and frankly rather poop-laden) escape. Killer clowns, telekinetic murderous rampages, haunted hotels, and…the undying nature of true friendship? Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption Introduction

Shawshank redemption novel

Also included is a 'Table of Ranks,' giving the German Army ranks and their equivalent ranks in the SS and the Nazi Party (NSDAP). The biography provides an excellent 'Glossary' that identifies and defines a number of German terms as well as terms specific to the Nazi Party. Published in 1976, after more than twenty years of research and interviews with many of Hitler's relatives, friends, and associates-both inside and outside of the Third Reich, this book provides a lot of little-known information about Hitler and gives a rare glimpse of the personal traits and quirks of one of history's most ruthless monsters. What stands this book apart from the many volumes written about Hitler since 1945, is the source material. The time span between these two dates provides a dynamic backdrop against which the reader sees the rise of an extraordinary person. The story of Adolf Hitler unfolds from an obscure Austrian birth to that afternoon fifty-six years later, when the limp bodies of both Der Fuhrer and his wife of one day were doused with gasoline and torched by his faithful servants. One quickly recognizes the crisp and illuminating style of John Toland, who is both a good writer and a good 'read. Read moreĮven for one who thinks that he or she already knows everything there is to know about Hitler, this book remains a fascinating biography. Certainly many people were aware how dangerous he was but this book also shows why many people thought Hitler could save Germany and so chose to accept him as 'mein Fuhrer'.This is one long audiobook - it's kinda 'all hitler, all the time' - but well worth the read if you like WWII info. One thing I particularly liked is that the book explained the violent and outrageous events going on before the war that made Hitler seem like more of an acceptable choice to lead. It *mostly* just tells Hitler's story from childhood to death. The author pretty much tells the story of Hitler rather than the story of 'why' Hitler did what he did this makes the story all that much better because it doesn't try to claim any theories and then line up the evidence to the theory. Easy to read, too, not full of psycho-analytical jargon - author does comment on some theories of behavior but it's usually to either justify or deny someone else's theory of Hitler's behavior. Incredible book, highly recommend for anyone interested in WWII.
